YouTube War is a conceptual augmented reality game created by Aaron Meyers and Jeff Crouse. Combining the intensity of a high-stakes poker tournament with the bizarre world of sensational online video, the competition consists of two players trying to out-do each other by presenting a series of videos (rendered as an augmented reality layer on top of a real card) to an audience. The crowd decides which video/card wins, and the winner takes both cards. The process repeats until the deck is gone, and whoever has the most cards at the end, wins.

Drawing on meatanalysis of the literature and new data gathered as a result of "No Child Left Behind" the researchers find that

"gender differences in performance were close to zero in all grades, including high school. [...] Thus, girls have now reached parity with boys in mathematics performance in the U.S., even in high school where a gap existed in earlier decades."

A question, that is not addressed by the study, but which I am curious about is how much of the narrowing of the gender gap is girls catching up vs how much is boys falling behind; especially as numeracy is one of my pet peeves.

It is often said that getting down to students' eye level is important when delivering praise or sanctions to students. This can often be interpreted as leaning over a student rather than standing above them or sitting down next to them. I often observe teachers who think they are at the student's eye level but are actually still demanding that the student looks up at them. I prefer the student to be looking down at me; teachers who do this know that crouching down lower than eye level is not weak but assertive and confident physical language.

Hundreds of parent groups have expressed interest in setting up the schools, which are funded by the state but are independent of town hall control and run by independent organisations.

But Per Thulberg, director general of the Swedish National Agency for Education, said the schools had "not led to better results" in Sweden.

Michael Gove, the shadow education secretary, believes that by establishing up to 2,000 of these schools, parents would have more choice and existing schools would be forced to improve.

But Thulberg told BBC's Newsnight programme that where these schools had improved their results, it was because the pupils they took had "better backgrounds" than those who attended the institutions the free schools had replaced.
